WASHINGTON, D.C. (AP) James Miller scored 30 points on 11-for-16 shooting, Damon Collins added 19 points and Solomon Mangham had 16 points and 11 rebounds and Howard won its first game of the year beating American 71-54 on Saturday.
Miller's jumper and layup and free throw by Mangham gave Howard (1-5) a 9-8 lead. The Bison went on to outscore American 20-4 over the next five minutes.
Howard led 32-26 at the half, and a Miller layup with 15:36 to go gave Howard a double-digit lead for the rest of the contest. Collins' layup with 6:54 to go gave Howard a 57-35 lead.
Sa'eed Nelson led American (1-6) with 18 points and Delante Jones and Mark Gasperini each scored 12 for the Eagles.
Howard has been without James Daniel III who suffered a high ankle sprain in the preseason and has yet to play. The preseason MEAC Player of the Year is scheduled to be back in two to three weeks.
