Northeast Conference bid-winner Mount St. Mary’s faces Southland Conference winner New Orleans in the first of two games slated for Tuesday in the “First Four.” The winner advances to play No. 1 overall seed Villanova.

A 16-seed has never beaten a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament. But they don’t call it March Madness just for fun. Anything can happen, and one of these teams will get a chance at making history.

About Mount St. Mary’s: Mount St. Mary’s is in the dance for the fifth time in school history. An NEC team has never won a tournament game that wasn’t a 16-vs.-16 scenario. So that fact doesn’t bode well. The Mount won a game as a 16-seed in 2008 over No. 16 Coppin State. Mount St. Mary’s won the NEC tourney at home as the top seed, beating No. 4 St. Francis (Pennsylvania) 71-61. While some mid-major leagues have oft-criticized ways of putting on their league tournaments, the NEC does it right. The higher seed in that tournament always has the home-court advantage, and,  yet again, the top seed wins out, giving the NEC its best chance at pulling off a March Madness upset. 

About New Orleans: New Orleans hasn’t been to the Big Dance since 1996, and it took every second of overtime against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi to get them back here. It’s the fifth-ever NCAA Tournament appearance for the Privateers.

New Orleans is an amazing story. The Privateers snapped a two-decade tourney drought to make it back to the big stage, but I think Mount St. Mary’s -- led by sophomore star Elijah Long -- will come out victorious. So give me Mount St. Mary’s straight up against the spread.
