South Carolina: With 29 points in the comeback win against Marquette and 24 points in the Gamecocks’ second-round upset victory over Duke, Sindarious Thornwell etched himself into school history forever as the face of the first NCAA Tournament run in nearly a half-century. The Gamecocks lost five of seven games heading into the postseason but have totally reversed course in one weekend, finishing as the kings of the Greenville, South Carolina-based pod, celebrated by local fans and North Carolina neighbors sticking around to cheer against Duke. South Carolina can’t take its home-court advantage on the road to the Sweet 16, but if it takes its second-half shooting they’ll have a good shot to keep this magical run going against Baylor on Friday.

Baylor: There might not be a team that had a more favorable road, at least seeding wise, than the No. 3 Bears did to reach the Sweet 16. They opened the tournament with 14th-seeded New Mexico State, and because of a first-round upset they faced 11th-seeded USC in the Round of 32. The Bears took advantage of a monstrous second-half performance from point guard Manu Lecomte to ride out a tight one against the Trojans, but another close game in the Sweet 16 will surely send them home disappointed.

Baylor relies on forcing teams to shoot themselves out of the game. It has one of the most fierce zone defenses in the country.  But USC and its athletic front court exposed it, providing the blue print for breaking and attacking it with ball movement and phenomenal outside shooting. The defensive rotations were lazy -- kind of like they had been playing all weekend! -- and have to be tightened up if they want to make their way to Phoenix. South Carolina is disciplined enough to take advantage of that.
