No. 1 -- Advancing to the Elite Eight. The Orange held off Wisconsin in the Sweet 16 to win a thriller, 64-63. The game was well played by both teams and the second half was as exciting as any in this year’s tournament. The Orange had to shoot 55 percent to offset 14 3-pointers by Wisconsin. Syracuse survived a last second shot by PG Jordan Taylor to advance to its first Elite 8 since 2003. No. 2 -- Jim Boeheim’s 880th win. On Feb. 8 Syracuse defeated Big East rival Georgetown, 64-61, to give Boeheim his 880th career victory. Boeheim passed North Carolina’s Dean Smith for third place on the all-time Division I wins list and now trails only Bob Knight (902) and Duke’s Mike Krzyzewski (927). Boeheim downplayed the accomplishment but he’ll likely end his career with the second most wins among Division I coaches. No. 3 -- Wins over UConn. Syracuse and UConn have been the Big East’s two flagship programs for close to 20 years. However, with the Orange headed to the ACC and the college sports landscape in constant flux, Syracuse’s 58-55 win over the Huskies in the Big East Tournament could be the last time the two schools meet in that environment. The Orange defeated UConn three times this year, the first time that’s happened since 1983.
