ACC/Big Ten Challenge Scoreboard for Nov. 28

Virginia 60, Wisconsin 54: G Joe Harris scored a game-high 22 points as Virginia (5-2) became the first visiting team to win at Wisconsin (4-3) in November since 1997. The Cavaliers trailed 36-31 with 12:32 to play but went on a 15-4 run over the next 4:40 to take control of the game. Virginia outrebounded Wisconsin 36-25 and outscored the Badgers 14-4 from the free throw line. Wisconsin was led by G Ben Brust who had 15 points on 6-for-16 shooting.

Purdue 73, Clemson 61: G D.J. Byrd made five shots from beyond the arc in the first 10 minutes as Purdue (3-3) built a 42-22 halftime lead at Clemson (4-2) and cruised to a road victory. Byrd finished the game with 22 points and was 6-for-11 from three. G Terone Johnson added 13 points, six rebounds, and six assists for the Boilermakers. Clemson F Devin Booker had a team-high 18 points and eight rebounds on 7 of 10 shooting, including a three. The rest of the Tigers combined to go 16 for 48 from the field and 3 for 23 from three.

Miami 67, No. 13 Michigan State 59: Miami (4-1) outscored Michigan State (5-2) 40-28 in the second half to pick up an impressive home win early in the season. G Trey McKinney Jones (18 points) and G Shane Larkin (15 points) combined to make 8 of 11 three-pointers. PG Durand Scott had 15 points and six rebounds in his second game since returning from a suspension. Michigan State lost for the first time since its opener against UConn. The Spartans were led by G Keith Appling, who had 15 points, six rebounds, three assists and two steals. Michigan State was outscored 16-5 at the free throw line.

No. 22 Illinois 75, Georgia Tech 62: With his team trailing 58-54 with 6:31 to play, G Joseph Bertrand scored 10 straight points over a span of 1:36 to put Illinois (8-0) ahead of Georgia Tech (4-2) for good Wednesday night. Bertrand finished with 15 points off the bench and was 6 of 8 from the floor. G Brandon Paul also had 15 points for the Illini, which shot 47.4 percent from the field and just 38.9 percent from the free throw line. F Kammeon Holsey had a team-high 14 points off the bench to lead Georgia Tech. The Yellow Jackets scored just four points over the final 7:17.

Boston College 73, Penn State 61: Freshman G Olivier Hanlan had 22 points as Boston College (3-4) picked up what was looking like a comfortable road win at Penn State (3-3) for the majority of the night. The Eagles led 59-39 with 5:23 to play, but Penn State went on an 18-1 run over the next 2:15 to cut the lead to 60-57 with 3:08 to play. Hanlan then scored the next four points on a jumper and a free throw to give the Eagles some breathing room. G Jermaine Marshall had 25 points for Penn State while G D.J. Newbill added 22 points.

No. 2 Duke 73, No. 4 Ohio State 68: True freshman G Rasheed Sulaimon scored 17 second half points as Duke (7-0) overcame an eight-point halftime deficit to beat Ohio State (4-1) and earn a split of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. C Mason Plumlee led the Blue Devils with 21 points and 17 rebounds, which tied a career-high. The Blue Devils used a 20-7 run late in the second half to turn a 51-46 deficit into 66-58 lead with 1:03 to play. F Deshaun Thomas had 16 points to lead Ohio State, while PG Aaron Craft and G Lenzelle Smith, Jr. each had 11 points. The Buckeyes shot just 33.8 percent from the field.

Big Ten Star of the night: G Byrd, Purdue. D.J. Byrd set the tone for the Boilermakers as they scored a road win over Clemson Wednesday night. Byrd had 15 points in the first 9:44 as Purdue built a 23-9 lead. He finished the half with 20 points, the same as Clemson’s halftime deficit.

ACC Star of the night: G Harris, Virginia. Harris is a calming presence on a roster that is full of young players. He was steady for the Cavaliers in a hostile environment Wednesday night, putting in a game-high 22 points despite making just 1 of 7 threes. Harris made crucial plays and free throws down the stretch to give his team an impressive road win.

Inside the box score – 3 numbers worth a second look

75 -- Plumlee made 9 of 12 free throw attempts against Ohio State, and he is now shooting 78.9 percent from the line this year. That is an improvement of more than 26 percentage points over a season ago, when he shot 52.8 percent.

5 -- Wisconsin shot just five free throws in its home loss to Virginia. The Cavaliers were clearly the aggressors, and the Badgers were unable to make a lot of plays going toward the basket. They will need to fix that going forward.

14 -- Clemson was outrebounded by 14 against Purdue Wednesday night. That number is partly a reflection of how poorly the Tigers shot the ball, but it also quantifies how much they missed F Milton Jennings, who was suspended due to a violation of team rules.
