Big Ten scoreboard for Nov. 12
No. 5 Michigan 91, IUPUI 54: Trey Burke tied a career-high with nine assists and the Wolverines shot 62 percent (13 of 21) from the 3-point line as Monday's game was never in doubt. The Wolverines finished the game on a 20-2 run, holding the Jaguars to one made jump shot over the final six minutes. Michigan will face Cleveland State tomorrow night in the quarterfinals of the NIT Tip-Off tournament.
No. 1 Indiana 87, North Dakota State 61: Indiana’s bench provided 36 points and Cody Zeller poured in 22 as the Hoosiers handled North Dakota State. Sophomore G Remy Abell, a reserve, continued his torrid start to the season, hitting all five shots Sunday night. He’s now 7 for 7 this season, including 5 of 5 from the 3-point line.
Iowa 73, Central Michigan 61: The Hawkeyes forced 19 turnovers and limited Central Michigan to just 39 percent shooting as Iowa won. Forward Aaron White was active in the post with 14 points and nine rebounds as the Hawkeyes improved to 2-0. Illinois 89, Saint Francis 64: Four players finished with double-digit scoring as the Illini cruised to an 89-64 victory over Saint Francis. Forward Tyler Griffey was one-shy of his career-high with 17 points and tied for the team lead with five rebounds.
Minnesota 82, Toledo 56: Minnesota held Toledo to just 31 percent (19 for 61) shooting and limited their second-chance opportunities by out-rebounding the Rockets, 42-20. Trevor Mbakwe had seven rebounds off the bench, but the Gophers were paced by the backcourt of Joe Coleman and Austin Hollins, who combined for 28 points.
Star of the night: Iowa coach Fran McCaffery clearly had no reservations about playing freshman Mike Gesell the majority of Monday's game. Gesell logged 32 minutes, finished 6 for 11, including three 3-pointers, and had two no-look dishes to White, who slammed home the assists off of baseline cuts. His final 3-pointer with just under 10 minutes left extended the Hawkeyes lead to 11 and it never got closer than seven for the rest of the game.
Inside the box score -- 3 numbers worth a second look
27 -- Minnesota has scored the first 27 points of its opening two games. It went up 15-0 on American in the Gophers' season-opener and then scored the first 12 on Monday night against Toledo.
37.5 -- Despite all of the offeseason improvement from potential player of the year candidate Cody Zeller, he has much more work to do at the free throw line. Zeller shot 75 percent from the free throw line last year but through two games, is just 6 for 16 on his free throws.
34 -- The Hawkeyes (15) and the Chippewas (19) combined for 34 turnovers in Monday night's game. It was Central Michigan's season opener but for Iowa, it marked the second straight game with at least 13 turnovers.
Monday's quote of the day: "He brings a lot of versatility. He's very athletic and very active on the boards and he's able to get out in transition and run," Burke said to ESPN of his Michigan teammate, Glenn Robinson III. "You can find him on the floor, when a lot of players leave him, we're able to throw lobs to him and things like that." Robinson, a freshman, was 8 for 9 shooting and had 21 points to go along with six rebounds in his second career game. He also finished with two alley-oops.
