Big Ten scoreboard for Nov. 9

No. 1 Indiana 97, Bryant 54: Indiana F Cody Zeller kicked off his national player of the year campaign by scoring a team-high 18 points to go with 10 rebounds and an assist. Hoosiers F Christian Watford had 15 points and 15 rebounds. Bryant shot 32 percent and had 17 turnovers.

Iowa 86, Texas-Pan American 55: F Aaron White led four players in double figures with 16 points as the Hawkeyes cruised to an easy victory. Iowa played 14 players at least three minutes each as the hosts grabbed 49 rebounds and scored 16 second-chance points.  

No. 5 Michigan 100, Slippery Rock 62: Wolverines G Tim Hardaway, Jr. had a team-high 25 points as he made all five of his 3-pointers against Division II Slippery Rock. He was helped by G Trey Burke, who added 21 points, and freshman Glenn Robinson III, who had 10 points and eight rebounds.

Penn State 65, St. Francis (Pa.) 58: Nittany Lions G Tim Frazier and F D.J. Newbill combined for 39 points, 11 rebounds, seven assists and three steals. Overall, Penn State made a mere 3 of 24 3-pointers. The Nittany Lions' next game is against N.C. State as part of the Puerto Rico Tip-off tournament beginning on Nov. 15. 

Illinois 75, Colgate 55: Fighting Illini first-year coach John Groce might finally have found the way to get the most out of talented G Brandon Paul. The senior played one of the most complete games of his career with 20 points on 8-of-15 shooting to go with eight rebounds, five assists and two steals. Colgate missed 16 three-pointers and had 17 turnovers.

Minnesota 72, American 36: Golden Gophers G Austin Hollins scored a career-high 20 points on 8-of-16 shooting to go with five rebounds and five steals. F Rodney Williams added 16 points on 7-of-10 shooting as 10 players scored for Minnesota. American shot 23.7 percent and jst five assists five assists.

Connecticut 66, No. 14 Michigan State 62: The Spartans clawed back from a 16-point first-half deficit only to lose 66-62 to UConn on Friday night at Ramstein Air Base in Germany. Michigan State's offense was out of sync all game as it shot just 37 percent (24 of 64). Spartans G Keith Appling led Michigan State with 17 points but the Spartans had 14 turnovers and was sloppy in the post. It's the second straight season the Spartans have lost their opener, falling last season to North Carolina on an aircraft carrier off the shore of San Diego. 

Bucknell 70, Purdue 65: An ankle injury to G Terone Johnson (9.2 ppg, 3.4 rpg) forced the junior to miss the season opener and the Boilermakers were inconsistent on both ends without him. Freshman F Donnie Hale scored a team-high 15 points and senior F D.J. Byrd and freshman G Ronnie Johnson each added 12. Purdue had a chance to tie late, but Byrd couldn’t connect on a 3-pointer in the dying seconds.

No. 4 Ohio State vs. Marquette -- no contest. The Carrier Classic on the deck of the USS Yorktown in Charlestown, S.C., was cancelled due to heavy condensation on the court. The game will not be rescheduled.

Stars of the night: Burke and Hardaway, Jr. Just call them the dynamic duo. Hardaway eclipsed the 1,000 career-point mark on Friday as Burke, who bypassed the NBA to return for his sophomore year, routinely found him open for jumpers. Both players cracked 20 points and Hardaway added 10 rebounds and Burke eight assists. "Trey was beautiful setting him up, they are really working well together,” Michigan coach John Beilein said. “It makes us tough to defend.”

Inside the box score – 3 numbers worth a second look

100 -- Points for the Wolverines, which was their highest total since 2007. Michigan finished 12 of 19 from beyond-the-arc and made 57.6 percent of its shots.

17 -- Free throws in 18 trips to the line for Frazier. The senior was 3 of 9 from the field, but his ability to get to the line kept the Nittany Lions in the game.

2 -- Years in contract extension for Indiana coach Tom Crean. Hoosiers AD Fred Glass announced the news with a microphone to the fans at Assembly Hall just before tip off against Bryant. Crean’s deal goes through 2020.

Thursday’s quote of the day: “I’m sorry you couldn’t watch us play, but come home safe and come home soon.” -- Ohio State G Aaron Craft giving a message to his brother Brandon, who is serving in Afghanistan. Craft sent the words of encouragement to his brother while signing autographs after the Carrier Classic against Marquette in Charleston, South Carolina, was cancelled due to unplayable conditions.

You don’t want to miss: Albany at No. 4 Ohio State, 2 p.m. ET -- So how do the Buckeyes respond? After their season-opener was cancelled against Marquette the team had a very unsatisfying trip back to Columbus and must re-focus for Albany. The Great Danes opened with a 69-66 win over Duquesne and are led by G Mike Black, who had 15 points in the win.
