LAS VEGAS -- The Nike EYBL circuit has returned to the desert for the first time since 2019, which means many of college basketball's next stars are spending the week here inside the Las Vegas Convention Center playing against each other and in front of coaching staffs armed with NIL deals they're ready to offer.

But, on Thursday, rather than play, the 6-foot-9 forward who was considered the No. 1 prospect in the Class of 2027, created a huge headline by announcing plans to reclassify to 2026, enroll at Texas and play for the Longhorns next season. It's a move that bolsters UT's already talented roster and has Sean Miller's team up to No. 5 in Version 20 of the 2026-27 CBS Sports preseason Top 25 And 1 college basketball rankings, where Florida remains No. 1 based on a projection that the Gators will return six of the top seven scorers -- specifically Thomas Haugh, Alex Condon, Boogie Fland, Rueben Chinyelu, Urban Klavzar and Isaiah Brown -- from a team that won the SEC by three games and was a No. 1 seed in the 2026 NCAA Tournament.
Spears is the son of former NFL defensive end Marcus Spears, who is now a television analyst for ESPN. The Dallas native picked Texas while rejecting offers from Arizona, LSU and Kentucky. Because he just turned 17 years old in April, Spears is two years away from being eligible for the NBA Draft (based on current rules) -- point being he's expected to spend two years in Austin.
UCLA also got better Thursday when the Bruins secured a commitment from Nikola Kusturica, a 6-9 forward from Serbia who, like Spears, is just 17 and is expected to spend at least two years playing college basketball. Kusturica selected UCLA while rejecting offers from Kentucky, Michigan and Gonzaga. He's widely considered among the leading candidates to be the No. 1 pick in the 2028 NBA Draft.
