Dayton forward Josh Cunningham underwent surgery Friday to repair a torn ligament in his left ankle and is expected to miss approximately three months, according to a statement from the school ahead of the Flyers' game against St. Mary's on Saturday.
Cunningham, a redshirt sophomore for Dayton, scored the game-clinching dunk and was injured in gruesome fashion coming down in a win over Alabama earlier this week. He was carried off the court as he screamed in pain, and was unable to finish the free throw he was awarded.
He originally began his career at Chicago before transferring to Dayton last year. He sat out the entire season last year per NCAA rules, but was expected to be a big contributor for the Flyers. In two games this season, he averaged 12.5 points and 4.5 rebounds.
Three months would put his return near March, and that sounds best-case scenario. Depending on Dayton's postseason fate, Cunningham could very well be done for the season.
