Coming off a statement win over in-state rival Michigan State, the Wolverines are squarely in the NCAA Tournament discussion and may even be trending upward. A win over Indiana would do well for Michigan's resume, and a winning its first Big Ten road game would do well for morale.

That could very well happen against the struggling Hoosiers, who have been bitten by the injury bug all season and more recently have lost three of four. But Indiana is still a tough team to knock off in Bloomington.

Scouting report

After missing three games with a leg injury, the Hoosiers leading scorer, James Blackmon Jr. (17.6 points per game) returned on Thursday against Purdue, which is a massive boost to the Indiana offense.

In Blackmon's absence, Thomas Bryant took on a larger role in the offense, and I expect that to continue. The 6-foot-10 center isn't a traditional big man. He can step out and knock down the 3-ball and has the versatility to guard multiple positions. Indiana needs Bryant to continue his hot streak if the Hoosiers want a chance at the NCAAs.

Michigan's offense has been operating at an elite level during Big Ten play, ranking No. 1 in offensive efficiency. The Wolverines have four players averaging double figures, led by veteran guard Derrick Walton, who has averaged 22.5 points over the team's last four games.

Matchups to watch

With Indiana's lack of depth, if you can find a way to slow Bryant than you have a good shot at winning. That's why whoever draws the task of guarding him will certainly influence the outcome. Zak Irvin is an intriguing option for Michigan. He gives up four inches at 6-foot-6, but he's a solid defensive stopper who traditionally guards small forwards. Irvin fits the same mold as Bryant. He's smart, long and can guard the perimeter. I don't think it makes sense for Michigan to throw a traditional big man on Bryant, given his tendencies to play outside the paint.

Even with the injuries, Indiana has shown more life than many expected. IU has been competitive in every loss this season -- except its 30-point loss to Michigan two weeks ago. Michigan has a lot to play for in this one, so I think the Wolverines get their first Big Ten road win against the short-handed Hoosiers.
