Saturday -- hell, the weekend -- in college basketball belonged to Kentucky superfreshman Malik Monk.
The 18-year-old went for a Kentucky freshman record 47 points in UK's incredibly entertaining 103-100 victory against North Carolina in the CBS Sports Classic.
The game was the best in college hoops this season. Kentucky is making a habit of putting on some great showings, though. These Wildcats have put on incredibly fun outings as well in a victory against Michigan State and a loss to UCLA.
Monk was just ridiculous, though. He showed elite-level scoring, the type of performance -- offensively -- that could have him flirting with a top-five draft destiny. Monk's night bested the previous UK freshman scoring record of 35 points, which was shared by Terrence Jones (2011) and Jamal Murray (2015), both of whom were UK players under John Calipari.
Scroll through this post, click on all the videos, and watch it over and over again. That form is really nice, and Monk is not low on swagger. After this game, Monk is now appointment television going forward.
First, here are all of his 47 points. Check the array of highlights:
Monk was everything we love in a modern college basketball player: aggressive on offense, feeling his mojo in the moment, totally in the zone. He was hitting shots off screens, off the bounce, getting dudes on shot fakes, nailing treys with hands in his face.

What a night for Malik Monk. What a move by Malik Monk. https://t.co/oJbxlJpFRO
Monk was so fun because he was unafraid. I would love to see him drive more, because as you can see at the end of this sequence, he has great control and instinct when he attacks the rim. Granted, this is in the open floor, but still, wait until Monk really starts to use an aggressive bend to his game. His shooting is great -- and still a little streaky -- but he has got an overall offensive package that hasn't been fully unveiled yet.

Kentucky has a blend of shooters and scorers, play makers and game changers. Monk has the potential to be the superstar of the group, but I'll be interested to see how the rest of the team responds in the Louisville road game on Wednesday. The Cardinals are going to D up on Monk a huge way.
Want more? Oh, we have more. Here's everything Monk did with the ball in his hands and before it went in the hoop.
There have been 28 games wherein a Kentucky player has gone for at least 40 points. But none of them came against a top-10 opponent and featured a winning shot as part of a 47-point showing.
That's why Monk's performance is on the very short list of the best games in the history of any player to ever wear a Kentucky Wildcats uniform.
