Maryland coach Mark Turgeon took to Twitter when he saw that none of his players were picked for the Big Ten All-Freshman team.
“If you have family, you have kids, you like to stick up for them,” Turgeon said, clarifying his comments in the video above. “I was sticking up for my guys. I thought we had a terrific year, I stated facts. I was proud of our guys .. disappointed for them, but hopefully it puts a chip on their shoulder.”
Turgeon took a nice route in his comments, and there’s no point in taking away from the players on the team that deserved the honors. But he does have a decent beef if you evaluate importance and production.
Anthony Cowan, Kevin Huerter and Justin Jackson have all been rock-solid in starting roles for Maryland (24-7) this season. But maybe the “snub” will help motivate the young Terps in the postseason.
Here is the All-Big Ten freshman first team:
- Miles Bridges - Michigan State
- Jordan Bohannon - Iowa
- Tyler Cook - Iowa
- Amir Coffey - Minnesota
- Tony Carr - Penn State
