Minnesota suspended men's basketball player Reggie Lynch indefinitely after he was arrested Sunday on probable cause of criminal sexual conduct, the school announced in a statement.
Lynch was held without bail at the Hennepin County Jail until Tuesday. But he either had to be released or charged within 36 hours of being jailed, according to the Star-Tribune. Authorities will continue to investigate but have declined to charge thus far. So Lynch was released Tuesday afternoon.
"As an athletics department and a University, we are committed to respect toward all members of the community, and we hold all of our student-athletes accountable to the highest standards," the statement read.
Lynch averaged 9.5 points at Illinois State two seasons ago, then transferred to Minnesota. He sat out last season but was expected to play a key role next season for Richard Pitino's Gophers.

Last August, former player Daquein McNeil pleaded guilty to third-degree assault charges. McNeil was charged in November 2014 of felony assault and felony domestic assault for allegedly beating and strangling his girlfriend. The domestic-assault-by-strangulation charge was dismissed. In February, three players were suspended after sex videos appeared on the social media sites of Kevin Dorsey, then a freshman. The involvement of the other two players -- Nate Mason and Dupree McBrayer -- is not clear. The team later announced Dorsey would transfer from the program. No charges came out of that incident.
Meantime, Norwood Teague resigned from his position as Minnesota's athletic director last August after multiple women accused him of sexual harrasment. Associate athletic director Mike Ellis, who followed Teague from VCU to Minnesota, resigned three months later.
