Rutgers graduate transfer guard Nigel Johnson will play his final year of eligibility at Virginia, he announced Saturday.
“Everything was right,” Johnson told ESPN of his decision. “Heard the right things, good fit, I’m home.”
The 6-foot-1 guard started his playing career at Kansas State before transferring to Rutgers in 2015, where he played the 2016-17 season. As a redshirt junior last season for the Scarlet Knights, Johnson averaged 11.3 points, 3.3 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game and shot 35 percent from three-point range.
The addition for Tony Bennett might not be splashy, but it’s an important one. The Cavaliers lose backup point guard Darius Thompson to transfer along with their leading scorer London Perrantes (12.7 ppg, 3.8 apg) to graduation. Alongside rising freshman Kyle Guy, Virginia has a chance to be a contender again in the ACC with its stonewall defense and talented guard play.
