- Miami junior Ladarius Gunter grew up a Hurricanes fan. “My favorite player was Sean Taylor,” he said to the Miami Herald’s Manny Navarro. Gunter has a good chance of starting at CB in his first game for the Hurricanes.
- Wake Forest’s offensive line got thinner when LT Steven Chase went down with a torn knee ligament in Tuesday’s practice. An MRI Wednesday confirmed the ACL was torn, making it likely that Chase will miss the season, reported Dan Collins of the Winston-Salem Journal.
- The NCAA denied Duke’s request that S Jeremy Cash be allowed to play this season. Cash transferred from Ohio State. Since the Buckeyes are on NCAA probation that includes a bowl ban, Duke was hoping the NCAA would waive the requirement that Cash sit out a year. The Durham Herald-Sun’s Steve Wiseman said Duke plans to appeal.
- Duke got some good news Thursday. WR Terrance Alls of Miami’s Dade Christian high school gave the Blue Devils a verbal commitment, becoming the 14th member of Duke’s 2013 recruiting class, the News and Observer’s Laura Keeley reported.
- Maryland LB Kenny Tate has had three defensive coordinators, two head coaches and multiple position switches since arriving in College Park. Now a senior, Tate is coming back from a knee injury and dealing with the latest changes. The Baltimore Sun’s Jeff Barker talked to Tate about his Maryland career.
