Good news
- Florida State QB EJ Manuel returned to practice Friday: Manuel was held out of practice on Thursday after rolling his ankle on Wednesday. However, he returned to practice on Friday, and, according to Coley Harvey of the Orlando Sentinel, Manuel did not look limited in any way. The Seminoles saw their championship aspirations deteriorate in 2011 when Manuel had to leave the game against Oklahoma on Sept. 17 early with a shoulder injury. Florida State then lost three in a row, starting with Oklahoma. The Seminoles need Manuel to stay healthy to reach their lofty expectations.
- Ice cream breaks: Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson surprised his team on Wednesday when an ice cream truck pulled up in the middle of practice, providing the players a break during their final day of two-a-day practices. Duke coach David Cutcliffe did the same after Friday morning's practice.

Bad news
- Foot injuries at Boston College: Coach Frank Spaziani's team has been hit by the injury bug, and it has been a series of foot injuries that has sidelined some of the team's most important players. First, it was tight end Chris Pantale who went down with a broken bone in his foot. Then, it was cornerback Al Louis-Jean. Then, running back Rolandan Finch hurt his foot in a scrimmage on Wednesday night. Pantale and Louis-Jean will miss time in the regular season.
- Maryland loses starting QB C.J. Brown for the season: Brown suffered a torn ACL in his right knee during a scrimmage on Tuesday night and he will miss the season. That leaves coach Randy Edsall with two true freshmen and a wide receiver who is moving back to quarterback as his only options to run offensive coordinator Mike Locksley's offense. This is not the start the Edsall wanted in his second season at Maryland.
