Good news
- Offensive line play at Florida State and Clemson: The offensive line is a big question mark for the conference’s highest ranked teams. Clemson offensive coordinator Chad Morris said earlier this week that the line was coming along, and right tackle Gifford Timothy was back at practice after suffering a knee injury early on during preseason practice. His status is still up in the air for the opener with Auburn. At Florida State, the offensive line play is drawing positive reviews from both players and coaches.
- Duke WR Blair Holliday takes first steps since accident: Holliday was critically injured in a July 4 watercraft accident. On Tuesday, he walked without assistance for the first time since the accident, according to Laura Keeley of the News & Observer. “They took his wheelchair away from him [Tuesday],” Duke coach David Cutcliffe said. “How great is that? And the reason they did it is because he is so tough.”
Bad news
- More Maryland and Boston College injuries: Maryland announced this week that defensive end Andre Monroe would miss the season with a knee injury and linebacker Kenny Tate would miss 3-4 weeks with a left knee injury. This is not the start coach Randy Edsall was looking for. Boston College announced that wide receiver Bobby Swigert would miss several weeks with a left knee injury. Tight end Chris Pantale and cornerback Al Louis-Jean already are out with foot injuries.

- Virginia has yet to name a starting quarterback: This isn’t terrible news, but coach Mike London will not name a starter until Monday when the depth chart is released for the team’s first game with Richmond. It seems like Michael Rocco will get the nod, but the questions in Charlottesville over who is under center figure to persist throughout the season, especially considering it is Alabama transfer Phillip Sims who is backing up Rocco. The Cavaliers have options, which isn’t bad, but the team has to be careful that the questions surrounding the quarterback position don’t become a distraction.
