Every week, Maxwell Award winner, Heisman Trophy finalist, former NFL starting quarterback and CBS Sports analyst Brady Quinn will be here offering his picks on some of the closest, most-competitive college football games.
We have already seen some surprises, but you can set your mind at ease this weekend with these straight-up winners.
Last week: 3-0 | Season: 12-11
No. 8 Baylor at Texas: The Bears haven't been tested this season playing a weak nonconference schedule, and they tout a strength of schedule that ranks 126th out of 128 FBS teams. That being said, the Longhorns can't seem to find any consistency on defense. Missed tackles, trouble getting turnovers and negative plays have led to Texas losing four of its last five -- the most disappointing being a loss last week to Kansas State. Texas has far superior talent than a team like KSU, but the pieces aren't coming together and I'm not sure they can by the time Baylor rolls into town. The Bears are one of the most complete teams statistically, but again, that's been the product of a weak schedule. I believe the Bears will have too much for a Longhorns team that is trying to hold on to a lot more than merely becoming bowl eligible. Pick: Baylor
SportsLine ATS projection: Texas (+3.5) -- Analysis
No. 3 Clemson at No. 12 Florida State: Many Clemson fans thought Deshaun Watson would have a year similar to Lamar Jackson after Watson's performance in the College Football Playoff National Championship vs. Alabama. That hasn't been the case, as Watson and the Tigers have gotten off to a slow start. They have improved as the season has worn on, and help is on the way as running back Wayne Gallman returns after missing time due to a concussion. He rushed for over 100 yards last year in this matchup. The other element is the passing game of Clemson against a Florida State defense that has missed starting safety Derwin James. Look for the Tigers' top 10 defense to bottle up Dalvin Cook and force Deondre Francois to beat them. Not going to happen. Pick: Clemson
SportsLine ATS projection: Florida State (+4.5) -- Analysis
No. 15 Auburn at Ole Miss: Auburn is living off a four-game winning streak after early losses to both Clemson and Texas A&M. Just by basis of comparison, this could be a bad matchup for Ole Miss. One of these teams' common opponents is Arkansas, which Auburn throttled last week 56-3. Meanwhile, Ole Miss lost to Arkansas 34-30. Quarterback Chad Kelly has been prolific through the air, but he's had no choice as the Rebels defense ranks 107th in the country. Plus, he has a tough task going against a top-rated Auburn defense led by one of the best at getting pressure on quarterbacks in defensive end Carl Lawson. Expect the Tigers to run the ball and play keep away from Kelly. Pick: Auburn
