Former USC running back and 2005 Heisman Trophy winner Reggie Bush was the victim of an attempted break-in Tuesday night, police told the Los Angeles Times Wednesday. According to a police report obtained by The Times, three males dressed in black broke a window at Bush's home but departed before police arrived. Nothing was reported stolen from the Bush household in the attempt.
"Everyone is safe," Bush said in a text message to The Times.
Bush earned the Heisman Trophy by accounting for 2,200 yards from scrimmage and 18 touchdowns in 2005. The honor was later stripped from him in 2010 after an NCAA investigation found that he had received impermissible benefits during his time with the Trojans.
However, once the NCAA overhauled its name, image and likeness policy in 2021, a push began for the Heisman Trophy Trust to overturn the decision. He was reinstated and reintroduced as USC's seventh Heisman winner on April 24 of this year.
"I am grateful to once again be recognized as the recipient of the Heisman Trophy," Bush told reporters after the ceremony. "This reinstatement is not only a personal victory but also a validation of the tireless efforts of my supporters and advocates who have stood by me throughout this arduous journey."
Bush was a two-time All American, two-time AP national champion, Doak Walker Award winner and Walter Camp Award winner at USC. His No. 5 jersey was retired by the program. After his college career, he was selected No. 2 overall by the New Orleans Saints where he was an All-Pro punt returner and Super Bowl champion. His NFL career included stops with the Miami Dolphins, Detroit Lions, San Fransisco 49ers and Buffalo Bills before his retirement in 2017.
