In the first game between Army and North Texas in October, a 35-18 win for the Mean Green, the Black Knights turned the ball over seven times.
Surprise! Things turned out differently when Army held on to the ball.
The Black Knights got revenge on North Texas by coming away with a 38-31 overtime victory in the Heart of Dallas Bowl. Army, committing just one turnover and finishing +1 in the margin, rushed for 480 yards and attempted just four passes. Quarterback Ahmad Bradshaw and running back Darnell Woolfolk led the way with a combined 248 yards and three scores.
Army needed overtime to beat North Texas in large part because of its failures on extra points. The first PAT was missed and the Black Knights failed on three consecutive two-point tries. So instead of putting 35 points up in regulation and forcing North Texas to attempt a game-tying touchdown, the Mean Green were able to tie things up with a field goal.
The Black Knights also failed to run the clock out when an 18-play, 66-yard drive that took more than 10 minutes was ended on downs.
But in overtime, a fourth-down touchdown run by Jordan Asberry proved to be the difference as North Texas was unable to convert on its attempt.
A dream season for Army ends with eight wins, its highest total since 1996 when the program went 10-2. In between, Army had 18 losing seasons and won an average of three games per year.
