No. 1 -- What will change under Hayes? Kansas State's spring scrimmage is an amplified flavor of vanilla that's not available at any ice cream store, and all other practices are closed to both the media and the public. So just how the Wildcats' defense will change under new defensive coordinator Tom Hayes is still anyone's guess. Coach Bill Snyder says the scheme will remain the same, but players say there will be changes, especially in how they defend the pass. No. 2 -- Who will fill the hole at DT? The search to replace Ray Kibble at DT has raged on throughout the spring and doesn't seem to have yielded many results. Senior John Sua ran with the top unit during the spring game but didn't seem to have the position locked down by any means. Veteran Javonta Boyd and 6-foot-7 Darryl Blackmon, the unit's best physical specimen, will figure into the competition until the final day of fall practice. No. 3 -- Who is the No. 2 QB? Daniel Sams had the hype and the spot behind starting quarterback Collin Klein locked up. He was the backup and the heir apparent to the top job. Then, spring practice started. Sams watched true freshman Tavarius Bender jump him on the depth chart and seize the backup spot just before the spring game. The gap isn’t large, though, and Kansas State coaches expect the jostling to continue not just into fall camp but throughout the season.
