Kentucky has now lost QB Maxwell Smith and RB CoShik Williams. (US Presswire) |
The hits keep coming for Kentucky and coach Joker Phillips. After losing starting QB Maxwell Smith indefinitely to ankle surgery on Monday, the Wildcats announced that starting RB Coshik Williams has a torn labrum in his hip and is out for the year.
Williams is a fifth-year senior, so Phillips confirmed that he won't get a medical redshirt, thus ending his career.
"I feel (heartbroken) for him," Phillips told the Courier-Journal. "Not for us; for him. Because the guy has worked so hard."
Williams rose from walk-on to starting RB for Kentucky. He had 486 yards on 118 attempts in 2011, and he was expected to have an even bigger role this season. Instead, an early-season back injury and his hip injury have limited him to only playing one full game this season, the opener against Louisville. He had 14 carries for 66 yards in that game.
RBs Jonathan George (35 carries, 182 yards) and Raymond Sanders (40 carries, 260 yards) will get much of the work with Williams out. Phillips also said that freshman RB Dyshawn Mobley (14 carries, 70 yards) is progressing nicely and will get more opportunities as well.
