The Liberty Flames weren't the first ones on the board on Saturday, but they got there more often. They blew past the Southern Miss Golden Eagles 56-35. Liberty was heavily favored coming into this matchup, and the results showcase why.
QB Malik Willis went supernova for the Flames as he passed for six TDs and 345 yards on 31 attempts in addition to rushing for one TD and 97 yards. That was the first 300+ yard effort for Willis this season. WR Kevin Shaa also deserves a shout-out for his two TDs.
Southern Miss' defeat came about despite a quality game from QB Tate Whatley, who passed for one TD and 188 yards on 26 attempts in addition to rushing for four TDs and 52 yards.
The victory for Liberty kept them a perfect 6-0. The loss dropped the Golden Eagles' record to 1-4.
Liberty will have some time to rest before their next contest, which is against the Virginia Tech Hokies at noon ET in two weeks at Lane Stadium/Worsham Field. As for Southern Miss, they will go up against the Rice Owls at 3 p.m. ET next Saturday at Carlisle-Faulkner Field at M.M. Roberts Stadium. Rice also suffered a recent loss, falling 40-34 to the Middle Tenn. Blue Raiders on Saturday.
