Amid all the cutting, waiving and re-signing of players over the weekend, the Vikings traded for Cardinals CB A.J. Jefferson to bring depth to the secondary. But Jefferson may add even more to a unit that was subpar last season.
“We liked some things that [Jefferson] did with his cover ability,” coach Leslie Frazier said. “He has the ability to cover man and also play some zone coverage. [He’s a] good press corner, but he can also play off. He’s a willing tackler -- we like that part of his game. He’s a long guy with his size, and we liked that as well.”
Jefferson joined his new team for practice Monday, quickly became acclimated, and lined up in punt-return drills.
“If they want to throw me back there, I will do some kick-returning,” he said. “I am really excited to get my hands on the ball whenever I can.”
The last few days have moved fast for Jefferson, who said the Cardinals were so deep at cornerback that he thought someone might get dealt. He comes to a Vikings team that doesn’t have such a luxury and was immediately moved to No. 2 on the depth chart behind RCB Chris Cook.
“Everything went kind of fast, but I am here now trying to make the transition smoothly,” he said.
Jefferson has started seven games for the Cardinals and has 66 tackles and one interception in two seasons in Arizona. He is excited about the opportunity to increase those numbers in Minnesota -- especially playing behind one of the best pass rushes in the NFL.
“No question,” said Jefferson of his excitement. “If you can get a good pass rush, the ball is going to come out quick and there is more opportunity for us to get interceptions and turnovers.”
Look for Jefferson to make an immediate impact for the team when the Vikings open the regular season against Jacksonville on Sunday.
