On Monday, Maryland announced that it would hold open tryouts for the football team on Sept. 3. By the end of Tuesday, the odds of aspiring Maryland students making the team had increased significantly.
QB C.J. Brown, who was expected to start this season, was already out for the year with a torn ACL, suffered last week, and the reeling Terrapins were hit with even more injuries at the start of the week.
Sophomore DE Andre Monroe suffered a knee injury. He’ll have surgery on Thursday and miss the season.
LB Kenny Tate, recovering from a knee injury that cost him two thirds of last season, suffered another knee injury. Doctors will examine him and determine how much time Tate will miss.
Coach Randy Edsall also announced that the defense will also be without:
- DL Keith Bowers: Out two to three weeks with an unspecified injury
- CB A.J. Hendy: Out three to four weeks with an injured ankle
- CB Isaac Goins: Out three weeks with a case of mononucleosis
- DL Isaiah Ross: Day-to-day with an injured hamstring
- S Matt Robinson: Will miss the opening game against William and Mary with a shoulder injury
The injured players combined for 38 games last season, and 26 starts. They had 157 tackles, nine sacks, and three interceptions.
The offense wasn’t immune to the rash of injuries. Walk-on QB Dustin Dailey will be out for an extended time with a sprained ankle.
