Michigan is going to be reintroducing a new starting quarterback in the 2024 Battle for the Paul Bunyan Trophy. Sources tell CBS Sports and 247Sports the Wolverines will start Davis Warren at quarterback against Michigan State. Warren started the first three games of the 2024 season before losing his job to Alex Orji, who then lot the job to Jack Tuttle after a few game. Tuttle passes the ball back to Warren after Michigan lost to Illinois, 21-7.

Warren, a former walk-on, threw two touchdowns to six interceptions in his three starts (66.7 completion percentage, 444 yards). Michigan beat Fresno State and Arkansas State with Warren and lost to Texas, 31-12. The Wolverines have not gotten any semblance of a passing game going the year after winning the national championship. Michigan ranks No. 113 nationally in offensive yards per play and No. 133 in yards per attempt, second-worst in college football.

Orji never eclipsed 100 yards passing in any of his three starts, though he was 2-1, beating USC and Minnesota and losing to Washington (a game in which he was pulled). Tuttle threw for 98 yards off the bench against the Huskies and 208 yards on 62% passing in the loss to Illinois.

Michigan is 4-1 at home, and Michigan State is 1-2 on the road. Michigan leads the all-time series 73-38-5.
