Shocking news broke in college football on Wednesday, Dec. 10, when Michigan fired head coach Sherrone Moore for cause, according to a statement from Athletic Director Warde Manuel. Moore went 16-8 in two seasons as the head coach in Ann Arbor after taking over for Jim Harbaugh. Michigan improved in Year 2 under Moore and had high hopes for the future with former top-ranked quarterback Bryce Underwood leading the offense. Now the Michigan coaching search is unfolding with many top names from this cycle already off the board.

Top Michigan football coach candidates

One name the staff has identified as a potential target on the (updated 12/17) Michigan football coaching hot board is Arizona State head coach Kenny Dillingham.

While there have been reports of a possible extension coming for Dillingham at ASU, nothing has been finalized, so he remains on the board for the time being. Dillingham, an Arizona State alum, took over as head coach at ASU in 2023 and is 22-16 overall, including an 11-3 run in 2024 that included a College Football Playoff berth.

His age (35) could be an issue for a huge program like Michigan, but TMI's Sam Webb says that's won't necessarily be a deterrent.

"Talk of his age being a deterrent merely because of the negative outcome with Sherrone Moore is overblown," Webb said. "Bobby Petrino is an older coach who had a similar transgression, and he's much older. So, Michigan is looking at poor judgment as a function of age. The only thing Dillingham's age speaks to relative to the rest of the field is his experience." See more candidates at TheMichiganInsider.
