No. 18 Michigan will be without its top offensive player Colston Loveland when it faces No. 11 USC on Saturday in Ann Arbor (3:30 p.m. CBS).
Michigan announced the news Saturday two hours before kickoff. CBS Sports had heard as of Friday night that it was trending in that direction for Loveland, who suffered a shoulder injury last week against Arkansas State.
The injury didn't end up being as bad as Michigan initially feared, but being without Loveland even just against USC would be a huge blow for a Wolverines offense transitioning to a new starting QB (Alex Orji) and that's averaging just 21 points per game on offense despite two of Michigan's first three games being against Group of Five opponents.
Loveland is one of the best tight ends in college football, if not the very best. He has 19 receptions for 187 yards and a touchdown this season. A year ago he caught 45 passes for 649 yards and four scores.
