The Navy Midshipmen experienced an absolute beatdown on Saturday but somehow put the pieces back together and came to play against the SMU Mustangs. Navy was able to grind out a solid win over SMU on Saturday, winning 35-28. SMU can consider this payback for the 31-30 defeat they dealt the Midshipmen the last time the teams encountered one another last September.
QB Malcolm Perry didn't help Navy's cause all that much against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish last week, but the same can't be said for this game. Perry went supernova for Navy as he rushed for 195 yards and two TDs on 38 carries. Perry put himself on the highlight reel with a 70-yard TD scramble in the fourth quarter. More help came courtesy of LB Paul Carothers, who was good for nine tackles.
SMU's loss came about despite a quality game from QB Shane Buechele, who passed for 251 yards and two TDs on 28 attempts. Near the top of the highlight reel was Buechele's 61-yard TD bomb to WR Rashee Rice in the fourth quarter.
Navy will take on the Houston Cougars at 11:11 a.m. ET next week at TDECU Stadium. The Mustangs will take on the Tulane Green Wave at 11:11 a.m. ET at home. Both of those teams will be looking to wash their mouths of the bitter taste of defeat when they meet up.
