USC QB Matt Barkley was all smiles against Colorado, but the Arizona offense is just a bit more potent than the Buffaloes. (AP) |
No. 10 USC (6-1, 4-1 Pac-12) at Arizona (4-3, 1-3 Pac-12)
Kickoff: Saturday, 3:30 p.m. ET (ABC/ESPN2)
Spread: USC by 6.5
Watchability: This is one heck of an arms race, and now we're picturing a bunch of running arms, and that's hilarious. This, though, is serious business. It should be one heck of a game.
Shining stars: USC -- LB Dion Bailey may not get the national pub of his more-heralded teammates, but he's putting together a nice season. He leads the Trojans with four interceptions and is third with just more than six tackles per game. He'll be charged with keeping a close eye on the Wildcats' explosive backfield. Arizona -- RB Ka'Deem Carey. Welcome to the big boys club, Carey. In a group of four Pac-12 running backs with more than 800 yards, Carey is the lone underclassman. In fact, the rest -- UCLA's Johnathan Franklin, Oregon's Kenjon Barner and Stanford's Stepfan Taylor -- are all seniors. Carey, who ranks second in the conference behind Barner with 11 touchdowns, is clearly the torch-bearer.
Who could steal the show: USC -- DE Morgan Breslin. The junior college product has been relatively quiet recently, but with the sheer volume of Arizona offensive plays, he should fill up the stat sheet. He's looming large for QB Matt Scott. Arizona -- S Tra'Mayne Bondurant. On a defense loaded with statistical standouts, Bondurant is shining. The sophomore leads the team in tackles for loss with 10.5, and he's added an interception and four pass break-ups.
You going? Ranking the road trip: Tucson rates in the bottom third of Pac-12 destinations, but for this game, it should be a pretty awesome turnout.
Magic number for USC: 3.86. The Trojans rank third nationally with almost four sacks per game, and they'll need to dial up the pressure on Scott.
Magic number for Arizona: 548.71 (and 464.71). Arizona is a tale of two extremes. The Wildcats rank fifth nationally in total offense with almost 550 yards per game, but 114th nationally in total defense with almost 465 yards allowed.
The game comes down to: The Trojans getting some quick strikes and putting the pressure on Arizona to respond.
Prediction: USC 37, Arizona 31
