North Carolina football is headed for its sixth straight bowl appearance, but in 2025 the program will be led by a new name and face. Hall of Fame coach Mack Brown will not return next season, wrapping up his 16 years as UNC's football coach over two stints. With a bowl win, UNC football will notch its fifth winning season over the last six years, and the program should attract rising coordinators and up-and-coming head coaches at lower levels in the North Carolina football coaching search. Retaining top talent and bringing in new players from the North Carolina football recruiting trail and transfer portal will be paramount. If you love the Tar Heels, or just want to know who will call the shots for UNC football in the future, be sure to see what the proven team of insiders are saying at InsideCarolina, the 247Sports affiliate that covers UNC.

Top North Carolina football coach candidates

One name the staff has identified as a potential target is Georgia defensive coordinator Glenn Schumann. He has been a central figure of this dynastic run for Georgia as he's been the team's DC since 2019 and has been with the program since 2016. Georgia led the nation in scoring defense in both 2019 and 2021, and then finished fifth in both 2022 and 2023. That is despite a litany of NFL defections, and he has this year's Bulldogs ranked in the top 25, nationally, in points allowed as UGA is in the SEC Championship Game for the seventh time in his nine seasons with the program.

Schumann is very familiar with winning, as prior to Athens, he was at Alabama for seven years. As an assistant or coordinator, he's won six national championships, with a chance for a seventh this season. At Bama, he was also a big part of recruiting efforts as the program's Director of Football Operations (2014-15), and he interviewed for the Philadelphia Eagles' DC job this past offseason, so there's interest from many levels for his services. Schumann appears ready for his first head coaching job, and the 34-year-old would inject youth into the UNC football program if he ends up replacing the 73-year-old Brown. See more candidates at InsideCarolina.
