Notre Dame's 2022 recruiting class received yet another big addition on Wednesday as highly-touted wide receiver prospect Tobias Merriweather announced his commitment to the Fighting Irish live on CBS Sports HQ. Merriweather picked Notre Dame over Stanford, Oregon, USC and Michigan to become the Fighting Irish's 20th commitment of the 2022 class.
A four-star prospect, Merriweather is ranked the No. 11 receiver and No. 75 overall recruit in his class by the 247Sports Composite. He is Notre Dame's first wide receiver commitment of the class, although three-star athlete Amorion Walker could end up playing receiver in college.
"When I was there, it was a good experience," Merriweather said of his visit to Notre Dame on June 11. "I had been there before when I was a freshman, so I had already seen the campus and gotten to know the coaches. Being there again, they treated me almost like a celebrity, which was kind of fun. But at the end of the day, they just told me kind of straight how it would be when I came and really got to know me, and I got to know some of the guys there."
Overall, Merriweather is the 14th four-star commitment for Notre Dame in a 2022 class that ranks fourth nationally behind only Penn State, Alabama and Ohio State with several months still to go before December's early signing period.
The 6-foot-4, 185-pound pass-catcher is regarded as a potential future second-or-third-round NFL Draft selection by 247Sports national recruiting editor Brandon Huffman, who likened Merriweather to Jaguars receiver Collin Johnson.
Here is the full scouting report from Huffman on Merriweather:
Merriweather is a lengthy receiver with optimal height and range, with a large catch radius, soft hands that can pluck passes from all angles and glides when in the open field. He's smooth in his routes and in and out of his breaks, adjusts well to throws and flashes great body control. Has tended to stay on the slighter side throughout his prep career so will need to continue to get stronger and add weight to avoid being pressed. Projects as multi-year Power 5 starter and projects as second day pick.
