Former Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford is the only freshman quarterback to ever lead his team to a Big 12 title -- and Bradford was a redshirt freshman.
Oklahoma State is trying to repeat as Big 12 champions with true freshman QB Wes Lunt. The Cowboys relied heavily on a great passing attack and the ability to create turnovers in 2011.
Can they repeat that successful formula with a freshman QB in 2012?
Best-case scenario: It turns out that the greatness of Mike Gundy's offense had more to do with the coach than the quarterback. It also helped to have an All-American running back in Joseph Randle. Gundy plugsin Lunt and the Cowboys keep lighting up scoreboards in 2012. The defense also improved as the number of turnovers drops, but Bill Young's unit goes from seventh in the Big 12 in total defense in 2011 to third in 2012. The Cowboys prove they are legit with a Sept. 29 win against Texas. Their undefeated season ends at K-State when Bill Snyder's ball-control offense keeps Lunt off the field and out of rhythm. OSU bounces back with a win at home against West Virginia and then wins the Big 12 by knocking off the Sooners. They return to the Fiesta Bowl, where they cap off another 12-1 season.
Worst-case scenario: Everything is hunky-dory until the Cowboys welcome the best defense in the Big 12 to Stillwater on Sept. 29. Lunt is indecisive against the Longhorns' pressure and struggles in a 24-13 loss. The Cowboys are 5-1 when the schedule gets tough and drop three consecutive games to TCU, K-State and West Virginia. After OSU gets bowl eligible with a win against Texas Tech, Oklahoma gets payback for its embarrassing loss in 2011. The Cowboys limp to Waco the next week and finish 4-5 in the Big 12.
Most-likely scenario: Oklahoma State's defense cannot replicate its 44 forced turnovers in 2011, but the unit is improved and the difference in several close games. Oklahoma State loses one of its home games against Texas, TCU or West Virginia, loses at Kansas State and also falls in Norman. A 9-3 season and third-place finish in the Big 12 is a respectable year for a team starting a true freshman QB, and the Cowboys are set up to contend for another Big 12 title in 2013.
