EUGENE, Ore. -- No. 5 Oregon logged its first win of the 12-team College Football Playoff era Saturday against No. 12 seed James Madison, and it had to have been a cathartic one for the Ducks, who returned to CFP play for the first time since their blowout defeat in last year's quarterfinals. The revenge tour -- and the search for the first national championship in program history -- is underway with a 51-34 win over the Sun Belt champion Dukes.
There were questions heading into the CFP about how the looming departure of both coordinators would impact the Ducks. Those uncertainties are gone. Will Stein put on an offensive masterclass and Tosh Lupoi's defense stiffened up when it needed to, holding James Madison well outside of striking distance on the scoreboard despite allowing a number of chunk plays.
It took all of four plays for Stein's group to draw first blood. Dante Moore threw the first of his four touchdown passes less than two minutes into the game and did so with a 41-yard strike to tight end Jamari Johnson. That explosive pickup set a theme for the night, as Oregon proceeded to rattle off colossal gain after colossal gain. Of its six first-half possessions, for instance, Oregon scored five touchdowns and had at least one play of 30 or more yards on each of those drives.
Simply put, James Madison did not have the defensive talent necessary to contain one of the most stacked offenses in the nation. It was obvious from the first drive of the game. The Dukes did move the ball better than the final score indicates but had to settle for field goal attempts too many times to truly threaten the Ducks.
Dan Lanning's team advances to the Orange Bowl, where it will meet No. 4 Texas Tech in a Jan. 1 CFP quarterfinal matchup. James Madison, meanwhile, embarks on a new era with Billy Napier arriving to take over the coaching duties as Bob Chesney departs for UCLA.
