Pac-12 Notebook: Cal sold tickets for seats that didn't exist

Besides Cal's loss, there was one other big hiccup at the reopening of Memorial Stadium on Saturday: about 100 fans were sold tickets for seats that didn't exist.

Back in February 2011, the NFL came under fire because it sold too many tickets for Super Bowl XLV. There were fans who bought tickets, but when they got to Cowboys Stadium in Dallas, they didn't have seats because the contractor hadn't delivered those temporary seats. Apparently Jerry-world isn't the only place where this happens. Fans at Cal's renovated Memorial Stadium experienced the same thing at Saturday's opener, the San Jose Mercury News reported. Tickets were sold for seats in three sections of the stadium that don't exist. "We are proactively reaching out to every affected ticket holder to solve this," Cal's associate athletic director for sales, Ashwin Puri said.
Also from the San Jose Mercury News, Jon Wilner handed out grades for the Bay Area's two Pac-12 teams. He wasn't very impressed with Stanford, which narrowly escaped San Jose State, but he was more impressed with Stanford than he was with Cal, which fell to Nevada.
Washington RB Jesse Callier tore his ACL in the Huskies' win over San Diego State Saturday, The Seattle Times reported. Along with Bishop Sankey, Callier was the co-starting tailback for UW this season. The injury will hurt the Huskies' depth. Callier had the most career rushing yards of anyone on the Washington roster going into the 2012 season.
The Pac-12 announced its conference players of the week Monday and they all came from the South Division. UCLA running back Johnathan Franklin was named the offensive player of the week, Arizona linebacker Jake Fischer took home defensive honors while USC's Marqise Lee was named special teams player of the week thanks to his 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown against Hawaii.
Arizona amassed 624 yards in total offense Saturday, the second highest total in team history, but the Wildcats could have had more, coach Rich Rodriguez told the Arizona Daily Star. The Wildcats had two touchdowns called back and a dropped touchdown pass. "It could have been 800 [yards], easy," Rodriguez said.
Washington State may have lost 30-6 to BYU in Week 1, but coach Mike Leach felt his team could have won the game. "Clearly it’s a winnable game," he said. "If we finish the first drive, there’s seven. If we don’t hold on two touchdowns, there’s 21, and then if we march the thing in on the kickoff return when we had the kickoff return, there’s 28. Then there’s six in field goals, that’s 34," Leach told to the (Spokane) Spokesman-Review. That's a lot of ifs. Just sayin.
Oregon State fans looking to learn everything there is know about the Beavers' next opponent, Wisconsin, will want to read this Q&A the Oregonian did with Badger beat writer Tom Mulhern. Among other items, Mulhern, who writes for the Wisconsin State-Journal, said Badgers star running back Montee Ball "looked rusty" in the team's 26-21 win over FCS Northern Iowa Saturday.
