Northern Colorado at Utah
Kickoff: Thursday, 7:15 p.m. ET (Pac-12 Network)
Spread: No spread.
Watchability: Not much. The first look at new Utah offensive coordinator Brian Johnson -- the youngest coordinator in the country at 25 -- piques the interest, but not too much, as the Bears come to town coming off an 0-11 season.
Shining stars: Utah: Senior running back John White IV is one of the most electric players in the conference, and is quietly one of the best backs in the country. His impact on Utah’s offense is only matched by defensive tackle Star Lotulelei’s on the Utes’ defense. Northern Colorado: Linebacker Clarence Bumpas made his name known quickly for the Bears, totaling 145 tackles in an all-conference second-team sophomore campaign. Bumpas added 10.5 tackles for loss and racked up double-digit tackles in nine games.
Who could steal the show: Utah: Senior wide receiver DeVonte Christopher has led the Utes in receiving yards and touchdowns for the past two seasons, despite less-than-stellar numbers. It’s time for the Utah passing attack to open up, and Christopher could capitalize. Northern Colorado: Senior returner Dominic Dunn should get several opportunities if the Utah offense handles its job. Gunn is the single-season and career kickoff return yardage record-holder, and he could take advantage of early season special teams sloppiness.
You going? Ranking the road trip: Maybe one-and-a-half hot dogs, if only because Ute fans are so passionate about their team. It certainly is not because of the wild-n-crazy Salt Lake City surroundings.
Magic number for Utah: 200. Despite White’s 1,519 yards, Utah still finished just seventh in the conference in rushing. Against the FCS Bears, the Utes should target the 200-yard mark on the ground.
Magic number for Northern Colorado: 61. Years it has been since the Bears last faced a Pac-12 team. The Bears faced Arizona State in 1941.
The game comes down to: Inevitability. Utah is one of the better teams in the Pac-12, and Northern Colorado was one of the worst teams in the FCS last season. If the Utes struggle even a bit, it’d be a surprise.
Prediction: Utah 38, Northern Colorado 20
