Live scores, highlights and updates from the Sam Houston vs. UTEP football game
The Sam Houston Bearkats will be playing at home against the UTEP Miners at 8:00 p.m. ET on Wednesday at Elliot T. Bowers Stadium. Sam Houston staggers in desperate for their first win of the season.
Sam Houston fought the good fight in their overtime matchup against FIU on Wednesday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They took a 33-27 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Panthers. Sam Houston gained 79 more yards on the day, but it was FIU that made the best of use of them.
Sam Houston's defeat shouldn't obscure the performances of Noah Smith, who gained 131 total yards and two touchdowns, and Keegan Shoemaker who threw for 306 yards and two touchdowns.
Even if they lost, Sam Houston's defense still kept up the pressure with four sacks. Leading the way was Issiah Nixon and his two sacks.
Meanwhile, UTEP gave up the first points and the most points on Wednesday. Their bruising 28-7 loss to New Mexico State might stick with them for a while.
Deion Hankins put forth a good effort for the losing side as he rushed for 120 yards while picking up 7.5 yards per carry. Hankins was no stranger to the big play, turning on the jets for a run that went for 54 yards.
Sam Houston's loss was their fourth straight at home (dating back to last season), which dropped their overall record down to 0-7. As for UTEP, they have not been sharp recently, as they've lost five of their last six contests, which put a noticeable dent in their 2-6 record this season.
In addition to losing their last games, both teams failed to cover the spread. Going forward, the match is expected to be close, with Sam Houston going off as just a 3-point favorite. This contest will be UTEP's fourth straight as the underdogs (so far over this stretch they are 1-2 against the spread).
