Updated at 8 p.m.: Regarding the arrest of cornerback Devin Butler, who was charged with battery of a law enforcement officer, the Associated Press reports that Butler allegedly "punched and slammed [an officer] to the ground" and police were forced to "use a stun gun to subdue Butler" during the incident.
Original story:
Six Notre Dame players were arrested in two separate incidents late Friday night and early Saturday morning -- one cited for police battery and five for marijuana and gun-related charges.
Cornerback Devin Butler was arrested around 12:30 a.m. Saturday at the popular Linebacker Lounge bar near campus on battery of a law enforcement officer and resisting arrest charges, according to the Observer student newspaper, which first reported these incidents. The battery charge is a felony in Indiana.
South Bend police spokesman Lt. Joe Galea said that after officers broke up a fight inside the Linebacker Lounge, they saw two women fighting outside. Butler allegedly shoved one of the women, he said, and then was "agitated" when approached by police officers. After "shouting profanities at the officers and swinging his fist," Butler struck one of the officers, according to the spokesman. The victim was treated at the hospital for minor injuries.
Butler was already set to miss the start of the regular season with a foot injury that is projected to keep him sidelined until October. The senior cornerback was still being held at St. Joseph County Jail as of Saturday afternoon.
Notre Dame spokesman Paul Browne said in a statement that "any student arrested on a felony charge also faces dismissal from the university" but the school will "determine if additional actions should apply to any and all students charged."
In a separate incident at about 10 p.m. Friday, starting safety Max Redfield, linebacker Te'von Coney, running back Dexter Williams, wide receiver Kevin Stepherson and cornerback Ashton White were stopped for speeding -- 73 in a 60 mph zone -- when police officers smelled marijuana and used a police dog to find drugs in the vehicle.
When searching the car -- which also had a broken tail light -- officers also found a loaded handgun. All five players were booked on misdemeanor marijuana possession. Redfield, Williams and Stepherson were also charged with possession of a gun without a license.
The Irish have not announced any additional discipline for these players.
