Game Recap
The SMU Mustangs fell to the Memphis Tigers 54-48 when the two teams previously met in November of last year; this time around, they exacted some revenge. SMU had just enough and edged out Memphis 30-27. Having forecasted a close win for the Mustangs, the oddsmakers were right on the money.
QB Shane Buechele had a stellar game for SMU as he passed for three TDs and 474 yards on 46 attempts. Buechele's 85-yard touchdown toss to WR Reggie Roberson Jr. in the second quarter made for one of the most memorable moments of the afternoon. We would be remiss not to mention K Chris Naggar, too, whose 43-yard field goal in the fourth quarter was the deciding factor in the game.
SMU's defense was a presence as well, as it collected two interceptions and two fumbles. The picks came courtesy of S Trevor Denbow and CB Brandon Crossley.
No one had a standout game offensively for Memphis, but they got scores from WR Calvin Austin III, TE Sean Dykes, and WR Tahj Washington. QB Brady White ended the contest strong with a streak of 13 complete passes.
The victory bumped the Mustangs' record up to 3-0. The Tigers' defeat pushed them down to 1-0.
SMU will take on the Tulane Green Wave at 6 p.m. ET in two weeks at Benson Field at Yulman Stadium. Memphis will have some time to rest before their next matchup, which is against the UCF Knights at 1 p.m. ET in two weeks at Liberty Bowl Memorial. If the game is anything like UCF's 56-41 win from their previous meeting December of 2018, the scorekeeper will be kept real busy.
