What to Know
The Memphis Tigers are 4-1 against the Tulsa Golden Hurricane since October of 2015, and they'll have a chance to extend that success on Saturday. Memphis and Tulsa will face off in an American Athletic battle at 9 p.m. ET at Skelly Field at H.A. Chapman Stadium. Coming off of a loss in a game they were expected to win, the Tigers nows face the more daunting task of proving themselves against unfavorable odds.
It was all tied up 17-17 at halftime, but Memphis was not quite the Temple Owls' equal in the second half when they met last week. It was close but no cigar for Memphis as they fell 34-31 to Temple. This was hardly the result Memphis or its fans were betting on, as they were favored by 11 points over the Owls heading into this contest. Memphis' loss came about despite a quality game from QB Seth Henigan, who passed for three TDs and 305 yards on 40 attempts.
Meanwhile, the night started off rough for the Golden Hurricane last Friday, and it ended that way, too. They took a serious blow against the Houston Cougars, falling 45-10. Tulsa was in a tough position by the half, with the score already sitting at 28-3. QB Davis Brin had a memorable game, but not in the way you want to be remembered: despite one touchdown, he threw three interceptions.
Memphis is now 3-2 while Tulsa sits at 1-4. Two defensive numbers to keep in mind before kickoff: The Tigers are 243rd worst in the nation in passing yards allowed per game, with 343.2 on average. Tulsa has experienced some struggles of their own as they are stumbling into the matchup with the 223rd most touchdowns allowed in the nation, having given up 15 on the season. It's possible one of these Achilles' heels will wind up tripping the losing team up.
