The Iowa State Cyclones ran circles around the UNLV Rebels on Saturday, and the extra yardage (493 yards vs. 135 yards) paid off. Iowa State steamrolled past UNLV 48-3 on the road. The margin was wide but not a surprise since the spread was 32 points in the Cyclones' favor.
The contest started off well for Iowa State, whose offense put up 24 first-half points. UNLV wasn't quite able to keep up, and the score was 24 to nothing heading into the break. The offense for Iowa State continued to do well in the second half, scoring another 24 points to put the game away.
Iowa State's success was spearheaded by the efforts of QB Brock Purdy, who passed for three TDs and 288 yards on 24 attempts in addition to picking up 33 yards on the ground, and WR Xavier Hutchinson, who caught ten passes for two TDs and 133 yards. RB Breece Hall was in the mix, too, providing the Cyclones with two touchdowns.
Iowa State's defense was a presence as well, as it got past UNLV's offensive line to sack the QB four times for a total loss of 11 yards. Leading the way was LB Gerry Vaughn and his two sacks. Those were the first sacks for Vaughn through three games.
Iowa State's win brought them up to 2-1. UNLV's overall record fell to 0-3.
The Cyclones are on the road again next Saturday and play against the Baylor Bears at 3:30 p.m. ET Sept. 25 at McLane Stadium. Baylor is coming in off of a big 45-7 win over the Kansas Jayhawks. As for UNLV, they will face off against the Fresno State Bulldogs at 10 p.m. ET next Friday at Bulldog Stadium.
