No. 7 Oregon knocks off No. 15 USC
Final: Oregon 42, USC 27
No. 7 Oregon withstood a valiant effort from No. 15 USC for a 42-27 win on Saturday in a critical game for both team's College Football Playoff hopes. The Ducks (10-1, 7-1 Big Ten) made game-changing plays in all three phases before gaining critical separation with a clock-eating fourth quarter drive.
A bad rash of offensive injuries for Oregon only worsened, leaving the Ducks playing three backup offensive lineman at one point. But the shifting unit still managed to open holes in the running game and keep quarterback Dante Moore upright. Noah Whittington surged up the middle for a 9-yard touchdown run with 5:30 remaining to cap a six-minute touchdown march that put the Ducks ahead 42-27.
Whittington was one of three Oregon rushers to score. The game's biggest highlight came on special teams, though, as Malik Benson's 85-yard punt return with 9:58 left in the second quarter put the Ducks ahead for good. Benson also made four catches for 67 yards as Oregon navigated a top-15 showdown without the top three receivers on their depth chart.
Amid the injury woes at receiver, tight end Kenyon Sadiq stepped up with a pair of touchdown grabs. The Ducks' defense rallied from an uneven defensive start to produce critical stops in key moments. A USC turnover on downs with 2:24 remaining secured the outcome. USC's Jayden Maiava completed 25 of 43 passes for 306 yards, but the Trojans and their own battered offensive line never generated consistency in the run game. USC never sacked Moore and produced just two tackles for loss, one of which came on a botched play by the Ducks.
