Washington added a commitment from graduate transfer quarterback Kevin Thomson on Wednesday, giving the program a boost of depth and experience at a position in need of both entering the 2020 season. Thomson, hailing from the state Washington, enters the mix from Sacramento State. As a graduate transfer, he is eligible to play immediately.
"We're really pleased that Kevin is returning to play for his hometown school," Huskies coach Jimmy Lake said in a release announcing his signing. "He adds a lot of experience to our quarterbacks room and should help raise the level of competition for everyone."
Thomson was the Big Sky Offensive Player of the Year and an FCS All-American in 2019 at Sacramento State, where he completed 265 of his 450 pass attempts for 3,216 yards and 27 touchdowns while also rushing for 619 yards and 12 scores. Sacramento State finished the season 9-4 overall and secured its first berth in the NCAA FCS playoffs.
His experience should pay off for a Washington program looking to replace the production and experience of Jacob Eason, who threw for 3,132 yards and 23 touchdowns last season. Eason was selected in the fourth round of the 2020 NFL Draft by the Indianapolis Colts in April.
Thomson originally attended UNLV out of high school but spent the last three seasons with the Hornets. He was granted additional eligibility by the NCAA due to a major injury and joins UW with only one remaining year of eligibility.
Washington has a dearth of experience at the position entering 2020 with sophomore Jacob Sirmon, redshirt freshman Dylan Morris and freshman Ethan Garbers all expected to compete with the veteran Thomson for the starting job.
