The West Virginia Mountaineers have been without a head coach for more than a week following the firing of Neal Brown last Sunday. Director of Athletics Wren Baker is eager to hire a new coach and fill one of the two Power Four head coaching jobs that remain open. Tulane head coach Jon Sumrall told school officials that he will remain with the Green Wave, so West Virginia can cross him off the West Virginia football coaching search hot board. Brown spent six seasons as the Mountaineers head coach, finishing with three losing records and just one season of more than six wins.
West Virginia has won 15 conference titles in school history, but it is still seeking its first Big 12 title after joining the conference in 2012. The Mountaineers are trying to find a coach who can lead them to a Big 12 title and a College Football Playoff appearance in the near future. If you love the Mountaineers, or just want to know who will call the shots for West Virginia football in the future, be sure to see what the proven team of insiders are saying at EerSports, the 247Sports affiliate that covers West Virginia.

Top West Virginia football coach candidates
One name the staff has identified as a potential target is Jacksonville State head coach Rich Rodriguez. The former West Virginia coach (2001-07) is currently coming off a Conference USA title, as Jacksonville State cruised to a 52-12 win over Western Kentucky. The Gamecocks have an 18-8 record over the last two seasons under Rodriguez, and his ties to West Virginia make him an obvious candidate.
Rodriguez spent seven seasons with the Mountaineers while they were still in the Big East, taking them to five bowl games during that stretch. The program has been inconsistent since his departure, with their last 10-win season coming in 2016 under Dana Holgerson. Rodriguez won 11 games in back-to-back seasons in 2005 and 2006, so he is a name to keep an eye on in the West Virginia coaching search. See more candidates at EerSports.
