An in-state rivalry game kicks off on Saturday in a series that has been somewhat dormant in recent years. No. 12 Utah faces off against Utah State at Merlin Olsen Field at Maverik Stadium. The Utes come strutting in after a victory while the Aggies are stumbling from a loss last week.
Last week, oddsmakers set the over/under for Utah against Baylor at a low 54.5, but even that turned out to be too high. Utah took down the Bears by a score of 23-12 in the team's first Big 12 conference game.
Utah got its win on the backs of several key players. Micah Bernard led the team in rushing with 118 yards, and also caught a touchdown. Quarterback Cameron Rising left during the first half with a finger injury to his throwing hand and did not return. He is unlikely to play in this game but should be back for the start of Big 12 play.
Meanwhile, Saturday just wasn't the day for Utah State's offense. The Aggies found themselves on the wrong end of a 48-0 whipping at the hands of USC. The Aggies were surely aware of their disadvantage in the point spread, but the foreknowledge did nothing to prevent the result.
Utah State had trouble moving the ball and finished the game with only 190 total yards. It was crushed by its opponent in that department as USC gained 544.
Utah's victory bumped its record up to 2-0. As for Utah State, the defeat put the team at 1-1.
Looking ahead, the game looks promising for Utah, as the team is favored by a full 20.5 points. They finished last season with a 6-4-1 record against the spread.
