The 49ers signed Benkert to their practice squad Tuesday, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports.
Benkert was among many other QBs to workout for the 49ers on Tuesday, but the team apparently didn't need long to decide who would provide added depth at the position. Following the season-ending ankle injury suffered by starter Trey Lance on Sunday against Seattle, the 27-year-old is in line to serve as San Francisco's No. 3 quarterback behind Jimmy Garoppolo and Brock Purdy moving forward. Benkert logged time with the Falcons and Packers, but he has yet to attempt an NFL pass.

Kurt Benkert: Waived by Green Bay
The Packers waived Benkert on Friday, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
Benkert signed a reserve/future contract at the end of January after spending the 2021 season on the practice squad. In his absence, Danny Etling will be elevated to the No. 3 spot on the depth chart behind Jordan Love and Aaron Rodgers.

The Packers signed Benkert to a reserve/future contract Tuesday.
The quarterback spent the 2021 season on the practice squad while operating as the Packers' third option at his position behind Aaron Rodgers and Jordan Love. Benkert has yet to attempt a pass in the NFL, but he will now compete for an active roster spot in 2022, when he could be the primary backup to Love if Rodgers goes elsewhere or retires.

Benkert was elevated from the Packers' practice squad to their active roster Tuesday as a replacement for Jordan Love (COVID-19 protocols).
Jordan Love tested positive for the virus and was placed in protocols Monday, opening up an opportunity for Benkert to join the active roster. With Aaron Rodgers dealing with a fractured toe, Benkert may be in line to take most of the first-team reps during practice. However, Rodgers is still expected to be the starter while Benkert operates as the backup on game day. Green Bay also signed quarterback Danny Etling to the practice squad as an emergency option.

Benkert and starting quarterback Aaron Rodgers (illness) have both tested positive and are set to miss Sunday's contest against the Chiefs, so Green Bay will need to sign another option to serve as its backup signal-caller Week 9. Jordan Love will draw his first career start Sunday in place of Rodgers.
