Jalen Hurd: Lands on reserve/retired list
The Patriots placed Hurd on the reserve/retired list Tuesday, Mike Reiss of ESPN.com reports.
Hurd has decided to hang up the cleats after spending a week with the Patriots, but since he's still under contract, he'll officially be placed on the reserve/retired list. The Baylor product missed his rookie season due to a back injury, then suffered a torn ACL ahead of the 2020 campaign, which was followed by a setback in 2021 that led to him being waived with an injury settlement. Despite being a 2019 third-round pick, Hurd never appeared in a regular-season game during his NFL tenure.

Patriots' Jalen Hurd: Latches on with New England
Hurd signed with the Patriots on Monday, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.
Selected 67th overall by the 49ers in the 2019 Draft, Hurd has yet to appear in an NFL game outside of the preseason due to numerous injuries. San Francisco eventually gave up on Hurd in November of 2021, and this is the first we've heard of him since. Having not played a meaningful down of football in five years, he faces an uphill climb to crack the Patriots' regular-season roster.

Jalen Hurd: Headed for waiver wire
The 49ers waived Hurd (knee) Thursday in an injury settlement.
The 2019 third-round pick will end his three-year tenure in San Francisco without having made a regular-season appearances, with a rash of injuries preventing him from ever seeing the field. After undergoing surgery in August 2020 to repair a torn ACL, Hurd was expected to be ready to go for the start of the 2021 campaign, but he suffered a setback in the 49ers' preseason finale and opened the season on injured reserve. Head coach Kyle Shahanan acknowledged earlier this week that Hurd wasn't on track to play at any point this year, and rather than monitoring the wideout's recovery over the offseason, San Francisco ultimately elected to cut bait. Hurd will most likely clear waivers and look to sign with another club once he's healthy.

49ers' Jalen Hurd: Likely out for season
Coach Kyle Shanahan said he doesn't expect Hurd (knee) to be available at any point this season, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
Hurd suffered a torn ACL in August 2020, but he was expected to be healthy heading into training camp this season. However, he was still forced to miss practices throughout camp due to a lingering knee issue. The 2019 third-round pick was able to appear in one preseason game, registering five touches for 28 yards, but he was still limited by the knee injury and was eventually placed on injured reserve at the beginning of the regular season. Now, it appears that he may spend his third straight full season on injured reserve.

49ers' Jalen Hurd: Hits IR again
The 49ers placed Hurd (knee) on injured reserve Saturday.
A 2019 third-round pick, Hurd has yet to make his pro debut due to back and an array of knee injuries. The current concern is tendinitis in his knee, which will sideline him for at least the first three games of the campaign. Even when (or if) he's able to return, Hurd may have a tough time climbing a depth chart populated by Deebo Samuel, Brandon Aiyuk, Mohamed Sanu, Trent Sherfield and Jauan Jennings.

49ers' Jalen Hurd: Could be headed for IR
San Francisco head coach Kyle Shanahan said Wednesday that Hurd (knee) will be "shut down for a little bit" and could soon be placed on injured reserve, David Lombardi of The Athletic reports.
The 2019 third-round pick came back from last year's ACL tear to play in a preseason game, but the 49ers have since decided he isn't ready for additional action. Hurd is expected to miss at least the first three weeks of the season, and it isn't clear he'll have a significant role in the offense whenever he's ready to play.

49ers' Jalen Hurd: Still bothered by knee
Hurd (knee) was limited at Wednesday's practice and didn't appear to be present for Thursday's session, David Lombardi of The Athletic reports.
Lombardi suggests that Hurd may be eased in this season after suffering a torn ACL last year. He played in one preseason game, and he'll likely be a depth receiver even if he's back at full strength. Still, the 49ers did keep him on the roster, and they haven't moved him to IR for the time being. Hurd could get some snaps Week 1 at Detroit.

49ers' Jalen Hurd: Should make cut if healthy
Hurd (knee) is likely to make the 53-man roster if his health holds up leading up to the regular season, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
Hurd made his preseason debut Sunday against the Raiders, finishing with 27 yards on five touches (one carry), displaying his versatility as a 6-foot-5 wideout with a history as a running back. The 49ers' brass clearly values the 25-year-old's talent given the strong endorsement for a player who has yet to record a regular-season snap in two years. Hurd is an intriguing asset should he ever earn a significant role in an offense, making him a name to keep track of whether or not he is on the field when San Francisco takes on Detroit in Week 1.

49ers' Jalen Hurd: Suits up for preseason finale
Hurd (knee) was back in action during Sunday's preseason finale against the Raiders, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
Hurd had five touches for 28 total yards in the preseason finale after dealing with knee tendonitis during the majority of training camp. The 2019 third-round pick is coming off ACL surgery that kept him out of the 2020 campaign, and while the 49ers are being patient, he is running out of time to make an impression as he still hasn't made his NFL debut. When healthy, his talent projects him as one of the top wideouts on San Francisco's roster, but he just hasn't been able to stay on the field.

49ers' Jalen Hurd: Back at practice
Hurd (knee) resumed practicing Wednesday, David Lombardi of The Athletic reports.
Hurd, who missed Sunday's preseason matchup against the Chargers, has been on and off the practice field throughout training camp. Most recently, the 2019 third-round pick received over a week of rest in order to manage tendonitis in his knee. Now that he's back in action, Hurd will resume competing to secure a role in the 49ers' receiving corps.

49ers' Jalen Hurd: Won't suit up Sunday
Hurd (knee) will not play during Sunday's preseason contest against the Chargers, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports.
Hurd is managing tendonitis in his knee, and coach Kyle Shanahan said the 49ers' plan is to rest him for 10 days. The 2019 third-round pick is working to put his injury history behind him after missing the first two seasons of his career, and the team has consistently taken a cautious approach to managing his reps throughout training camp.

49ers' Jalen Hurd: Returns to field
Hurd (undisclosed) returned to practice Wednesday, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
Hurd, who missed practice Tuesday, will now look to carve out a role in the team's wideout pecking order. At this stage, he's listed behind Brandon Aiyuk, Deebo Samuel, Mohamed Sanu and Richie James on the 49ers unofficial depth chart, per Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News.

49ers' Jalen Hurd: Misses practice
Hurd (undisclosed) didn't practice Tuesday, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports.
Per coach Kyle Shanahan, Hurd "just didn't feel right" Tuesday morning. It remains to be seen if the wideout's issue is indicative of anything other than a minor setback, but Shanahan acknowledged that Hurd -- who missed the entirety of the 2020 season after suffering a torn ACL -- is running out of time to make an impression as the preseason progresses.
