Pennington (hamstring) was placed on the 15-day disabled list Friday, Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register reports.
Pennington had an early exit from Thursday's loss to the Cardinals due to some cramping in his left hamstring and the issue has proved to be severe enough to warrant a DL stint. Brendan Ryan will take his place at shortstop Friday and the Angels recalled utility infielder Gregorio Petit to take Pennington's spot on the active roster.
