Canning (elbow) recently resumed throwing live batting practice and has advanced to the 55-pitch mark in those sessions, Maria Torres of the Los Angeles Times reports.
Canning has already thrown live BP three times and is expected to hold steady around 55 pitches in his subsequent sessions until the Angels begin their second phase of preseason training. Assuming Canning avoids any setbacks with his right elbow as he ramps up, he'll likely have a spot waiting for him in the Angels' Opening Day rotation. As a rookie last season, Canning posted a 4.58 ERA and 1.22 WHIP while striking out 96 batters over 90.1 innings.
