Rooker (knee) was cleared to begin a hitting progression Wednesday, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.
Rooker won't have enough time to return this season from a cartilage tear in his left knee that he suffered in June, but his return to hitting is a good sign that he'll be ready to go by next Opening Day. The A's are optimistic that he will be cleared for batting practice before the end of the season.
